Reaching out to our neighbor in need is an important part of the value system for Salem UMC. We try to find ways ot helping locally, nationally and globally. We do much of our work through the global offices of the United Methodist Church supporting disaster response efforts, health initiatives, missionary support and indigenous mission work worldwide.
Our home grown efforts are directed by the idea that we work from our current position of strength to assist those in a current position of weakness. To do that we currently are involved:
With Keeping it Real Ministries to provide worship experience, a meal and a word of encouragement to homeless folk in Columbia three times a year.
With Sharing God’s Love in Irmo to help address the needs of the less fortunate of out community through the distribution of food, clothing, and household goods and by providing assistance with some overdue bills.
With a growing connection with H. E. CorleyElementary School in our neighborhood.
Through a reaching into Dept. of Juvenile Justice to provide emotional support and kinship with some of the residents.
Through providing a mid-week bag dinner to homeless folk in Columbia during the summer Tmonths.
By working with a neighboring UMC on a “Come2Gether” weekend of home repair for local families.
By supporting financially local UM agencies such as Killingsworth Home and Epworth Children’s Home.
By youth and adult participation and support for Salkehatchie Summer Service.
Each small group in the church picks up their own one time outreach efforts. There are also annual youth/adult international mission teams.
